A Liner Hanger is a device that connects the liner to the casing or more simply “hangs” the liner in an existing casing. It is run at the top of the casing string, and allows the operator to hang the liner at a pre-determined location downhole. Its purpose is to support the liner load and prevent the liner from going into compression.

A Liner Hanger can be set in place or actuated by one of two methods: mechanically or hydraulically. Both setting methods would be discussed in more detail, in another section of this document. The liner hanger is designed with slips, which anchor in the previous casing string and prevent movement of the liner hanger after installation. Once the Liner Hanger is in place, the drilling and completion of the well can continue
